News from Nepal's UN Mission

July 31, 2002

Nepal has been elected Chairman of the powerful Fifth Committee (dealing with administrative and budgetary matters) for the 57th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Nepal's Permanent Representative to the United nations Murari Raj Sharma was elected Chairman of the Committee. This is the second time that Nepal has been elected to chair one of the main committees of the General Assembly.Two senior officials at the Nepalese mission in New York are working as vice-Chairmen of the Fifth Committee and Disarmament Commission respectively.

Besides, Nepal is a member as well as a Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNICEF and one of the four Vice-Chairmen of the Least Developed Countries' Bureau. Likewise, Nepal was elected as a member of the UNDP Executive Board joining next year. According to the available information, this is the first time Nepal been elected to the UNDP Executive Board and certainly the very first time Nepal will be a member of both UNCEF and UNDP Boards, two most powerful boards in the United Nations system. Moreover, Nepal has also presented its candidature for one of the Vice-Presidents of ECOSOC next year.
